BOOK CHECK
Dear Parents and Guardians,
We are excited to announce the beginning of the WEB Book Check program in our classroom!
WEB Book Check is designed to provide students with fun and level-appropriate books that they initially read at school, and can then bring home for continued practice. Every Monday morning, students will briefly meet with our parent volunteer to select a book of his/her choice from a level-appropriate bin. After selecting a book, the student and parent volunteer will read the book together. The book will then be placed in a large Ziploc bag with your child’s name on it so that it can be taken home in his/her daily folder.
Students are encouraged to re-read their book every night. Depending on your child’s reading level, you can use the book to practice one-to-one correspondence, the difference between letters and words, alphabet sounds, sight words, the role of punctuation, reading with fluency and expression, reading for comprehension, etc. Just 10 minutes of daily practice with a level-appropriate book will prove to be great practice for your young reader! Remember – you are welcome to help your child work through difficult text/vocabulary, but your child should do most of the reading on his/her own. If your child struggles through the book, remind him/her to point to each word as he/she reads. Reinforce important reading strategies like checking the picture, looking at the beginning sound, or re-reading to make sure the sentence makes sense. With your help, your child’s reading will improve in no time!
For the first few weeks, there will be no additional work associated with book check. This will allow students to slowly acclimate to this new routine. After a few weeks, a small assignment will sometimes accompany your child’s WEB Book Check as homework.
Please note: Books should be taken out of your child’s folder and kept at home for the whole week. Books should be returned to school on Tuesday mornings (via your child’s folder). As long as your child returns his/her book on that morning, he/she will be given a new book. If a student does not return his/her book to school, he/she will not be able to check out a new book and will have to wait until the following week to get another book. Please note that families will be asked to pay a small fee (approximately $5.00 to Deans School) for any lost or damaged books.
Please remind your child to return the book to school each Tuesday morning in his/her labeled Ziploc bag. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. Thank you for your anticipated support!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Martin-Jones

This program would not be possible without our parent volunteers, who volunteered to help facilitate our WEB Book Check program this year.
